This is a very large and highly decorated pink satin bag probably made in France in the late 19th c. It measures about 16.5" x 18" excluding the fringe and satin ribbon pulls. Its size suggests to me that it was a work bag or a bag in which to put underwear and other unmentionables. The fact that it has a piece of lace and net in the bag (which will stay with the piece) makes it probable that it was used as a workbag. The front has beautifully embroidered fuschias (I think) using silk and metallic threads as well as sequins; the back is plain. It has bows on each side, satin pulls/handles, and is lined in cream satin. It is edged in wonderful pink fringe and has metalic and silk passementerie drops terminating from pink braid. It is in very good condition with some scattered stains, a few weak spots in the satin, two small spots where the fringe has thinned, and a few missing sequins and dangles. (# 202443)
