An all original American leather covered box from the 1840's, probably made in New England. The top of the box comes to a point -- hence its "steeple" shape -- and terminates in a metal (probably brass) finial the same shape as its four original feet. It has its original wire looped closure (which is stiff and doesn't close entirely) and hinges. Its exterior is highly decorated with zig-zagged leather rondelles and scalloped leather strips with brass tack decoration. The leather surface also has been painted with polka dots (how wonderful!) but age and the darkening of the leather has made these difficult to see in places. The interior is covered in its original star decorated wallpaper and is edged in the top lid with blue striped wallpaper. The bottom is also covered with wall paper. It stands about 7" high to the top of the finial and about 5 1/8" x 5".
This box has surface abrasions, discolorations, and soiling commensurate with age. All the exterior design elements are present except for one rondelle and tack on one of the top quarters of the steeple; here there is also a tear to the leather exposing the wood underneath. The scalloped leather apron along the bottom of the lid has curled in places. The wallpaper interior is soiled and small bits of the wallpaper have come off. The wood that forms the steeple has separated from each other a bit (but is still very sturdy) resulting in separation of the wallpaper in the interior lid. Please see photos. (# 161988
