This is an American 18thc flamestitch wallet worked in wool threads. These early American wallets occaisionally come onto the marketplace, but they often have significant damage and wear to the needlework and textile used to form the piece. This one is in very good shape. The colors are still strong and vibrant. There are a few areas where the wool thread has been lost but overall much of the needlework is present. It retains its original green tape tie although it is worn in places. Except for a ½” area of wear along the back edge, all the green edging is intact and in good shape. The same wool used for the edging was used to line and construct the interior and that too is in fine condition. It appears that soon after – or perhaps even contemporary to its manufacture – an interior compartment was made of leather and textile. The leather flap to this compartment has hardened and buckled with time and about an inch has pulled away from the body of the wallet. The piece measures approximately 4.5” x 7.75”.
