Before I begin with the description, please be aware that what appear to be differences in the color of the garment in the photos provided here is due to  the fact that the full-length photos were take inside and the small area spot photos were taken outside on a sunny day. The real color is somewhere in the middle, but more like the interior, full-length photos.

This is a rare and wonderful original 1880s 2-piece bustle dress for a girl.  Antique adolescent clothing is not as common as adult clothing and this fantastic bustle dress does not appear to have been altered since it was made – another rarity. As expected for its age, a combination of hand- and machine-stitching is evident. I think the textile is cream-colored silk, but I’m not sure.  It is lined in beige cotton and decorated with brown silk. The bodice has a v- mock neck edged in brown silk with 2 lengths of opposing scallops also edged in brown silk all the way down the front. The sleeves have a slight curve to them and terminate in pleated cuffs under scallops and a band of brown silk. There are front darts, but no side-darts, producing a form appropriate for an adolescent girl. The back closes with 14 brass buttons with areas of white decoration.  The skirt has some hand-stitched ruching at the front with small as well as deep scallops, pleats, and other decoration worked in the brown silk along the bottom of the skirt. The back of the skirt is shaped for its bustle.

This 2-piece garment is soiled overall and has some areas of staining. There are a few small holes here and there and wear to the brown silk edging, particularly along the edge of the bodice.
